Shared SourceShared Source is the name of a Microsoft initiative that involves making their source code available to individuals and other organizations. The initiative encompasses a mix of technologies and licenses and combines aspects of both open source and proprietary approaches to software development. The majority of Microsoft's Shared Source offerings can be downloaded by anybody, but others have eligibility criteria that must be met. A range of licenses are used in the program including the CPL and licenses that Microsoft have created themselves. The rights granted in the licenses vary widely, from some licenses which only permit viewing of source code for reference purposes, to others which allow modification and redistribution of the code even for commercial purposes.
