Permissive LicensesPermissive licenses are software licenses which grant very broad rights to licensees, allowing almost unlimited use in a similar way to what is allowed for public domain software. Permissive licenses typically allow licensees to use, distribute and modify the licensed material, for almost any purpose, including distributing the licensed material as part of a FLOSS-licensed project, or a proprietary-licensed project. Permissive licenses may however contain some restrictions or limitations. These typically include a disclaimer of warranties, and may also require crediting the original author (an "advertising clause") either in modified versions of the software, or in the associated documentation. As a result, permissive licensed software may not necessarily be license compatible with other FLOSS which is under a different license. Some well known examples of permissive licenses include the BSD License the MIT License and the PHP License. Related Links |
